Learning the Gospel Through Hymns: Prayer of Thanksgiving
It’s that time of year again when we (hopefully!) reflect upon our many blessings and give thanks to Heavenly Father for all that he has given us. There are numerous ways we can do this: through prayer, through sharing with others, and of course, through music. There are several hymns for the Thanksgiving season in our hymnal, all of which are beautiful expressions of thanks and love for our Heavenly Father and for all that he has provided for us. My favorite of these is Prayer of Thanksgiving. I love this hymn so much that several years ago I played it in Sacrament meeting as the opening hymn – in July! Interesting that not one person commented on that… This hymn starts with the words, “We gather together”, which always brings to mind family and friends sitting around the Thanksgiving table, preparing to ask Heavenly Father’s blessing prior to eating our feast and enjoying this precious time with our loved ones. It continues on to remind us we are not forgotten, that no matter how great the opposition is, he will always be with us, “beside us to guide us.” How reassuring those words are in these times of instability and in some cases persecution.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, and remember to count your blessings!
